Lemon Tea?

Solve the following problems.  Good luck!

I have one large pitcher containing 1 quart of lemonade and a second large pitcher containing 1 quart of iced tea.  I pour 1 pint of lemonade into the iced tea pitcher and thoroughly mix it, and then pour 1 pint of the mixture into the lemonade pitcher.

1.  Is there more iced tea in the lemonade or more lemonade in the iced tea?  Justify your answer mathematically.

2.  If the process is repeated a second time, how many ounces of lemonade will be in the original iced tea pitcher?

3.  Is it possible to make both mixtures into 1/2 lemonade and 1/2 iced tea, using the same process repeatedly?  Why or why not?

Problem Set #1 (from MathCounts)

Twin brothers Devin and Kevin are complete opposites. For instance, Devin loves the summer, while Kevin prefers the winter. Devin spends his free time outside with his friends, but Kevin spends his free time at home alone reading. They are just as opposite when it comes to their school lives, and the following problems deal with the choices the boys make each week for lunch.


Each week, Devin buys school lunch on Friday because the cafeteria serves pizza every Friday. Monday through Thursday, Devin brings his lunch to school. The lunch he brings always includes a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a fruit and a drink. Devin has enough fruit and drink options to make a different lunch every day that he brings lunch for the next four weeks. If Devin has the same number of fruit options as he does drink options and there no days off from school, how many different fruit options does he have?

Kevin doesn’t eat pizza, so he brings a tuna salad sandwich, a fruit and a drink for lunch every Friday. Monday through Thursday, however, Kevin buys lunch in the school cafeteria. Kevin has twice as many fruit options as he does drink options. If Kevin has four fruit options. How many different lunches can Kevin bring to school for his Friday lunch?

Each four-week period, Devin spends a total of $10.56 to buy pizza from the school cafeteria. Kevin pays the same amount for each meal he buys from the school cafeteria and spends a total of $33.60 each four-week period. How much more money is spent per meal by the twin who buys the more expensive school lunch?

Math Awareness Month

The theme for this year is Math and Design.  We will have a design contest using math equations!  Here are the guidelines:  Use www.desmos.com/calculator to make cool designs.  That is it!  Check the 8th grade lounge for some examples.  They made clown faces with desmos. 

After you make your design, paste a screenshot into Paint and save as a JPG.  I will email instructions on how to submit later. 

Due date:  May 25th

Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place as judged by the math teachers.  Good luck!

MGP Events

Thank you to all of you that participated in the previous MGP sponsored events.  We went to Real Food Farms, Camden Yards, and had a bowling party so far this year. 

We have two remaining events. We will return to Real Food Farms to see how our hard work paid off. We will meet at the facility on May 18th at 9:00am to see the progress and do some more volunteer work. The afternoon activity is still pending, but we will do something fun, and we will have lunch.

The following Saturday, May 25th, we will go to Outward Bound at Leakin Park for teambuilding, low ropes and high ropes challenges, and a cookout. Space is limited so sign up today!

MathCounts State Competition

On Saturday, March 17th, William Little, Dennis Gong, Lynnette Jiang and Alastair Cho will represent Calvert School in the MathCounts State competition.  This is only our fourth team in the last nine years to qualify for state competition.  Good luck team!

3rd Annual Bowling Event

Join us for the 3^rd annual Calvert-FSK Scholars Bowling Event!  It is an opportunity to bowl with students from your MGP partner school.  Calvert and Francis Scott Key students will have chance to meet and interact. 

As an added bonus, the event will be used as a fundraiser for the summer program!

Time:              1:00-3:00 pm

Cost:                $20 for 2 hours of bowling, shoe rental, pizza and soda.
