American Math Challenge
Calvert School performed very well in the American Math Challenge. As a school, we finished 7th for MathCounts schools. In the grade-level group competition, Gold Grade 5 came in first for Calvert. This group of students was 4th place for MathCounts schools and 27th in the nation! Black Grade 5 finished 14th for MathCounts schools, and Gold Grade 6 finished 43rd for MathCounts schools.
The top performers for Calvert School were:
Noah (15,662 points, 14th for MathCounts schools, 89th in the nation)
Tyrese (14,355 points)
Mac (12,327)
Patrick S (12,014)
Brandon W (11,713)
For coming in first, Noah won a pizza party for his homeroom. Mrs. Ossmus even ate some! The other listed participants received Dunkin Donuts gift cards. Thanks for all who participated!

Arete Discussion on Honor
As an advisor, I have been given the opportunity to talk about honor with all of the seventh grade students. They each chose a person that inspires them as an example of honor, and then wrote a brief paragraph about it. I am going to include as many of these on my blog as possible over the next few months. I hope that you enjoy them! (I will keep them anonymous...)
Phil Mickelson Phil Mickelson is an example of honor for dealing with his wife's sickness and his own. He does the right this. Phil can carry on throught many changes. These changes include climate, play and how others play. I will work to be like him and use his strategies in golf. I will try to be honorable like him through difficult situations like what he faced.
Oprah Winfrey Oprah is an honorable person with a place here in my heart and in many others' hearts. She gained respect because she became a role model and changed the world with her words. She donates to people so they could live a better life and gives everyone a second chance to shine. She inspires me to speak with everyone's feelings in mind. She shows that I can change the world.

Math Awareness Month Challenge

If you check out www.weusemath.org there is a list of math related jobs. I noticed that an animator was listed. How does an animator use math? I had the same question.
1. List the mathematics courses that are required for animators today.
2. An animator averages 100 frames per week, which are enough slides to produce 4 seconds of screen time. If twenty animators created a 90-minute film, how many weeks would it take to finish?

1. How many people do you need to prepare taxes for? (400 people)
2. If you need 30 minutes to prepare taxes and work 5 days a weeks, how many weeks will you need in order to reach your goal? Assume that you work from 9AM-5PM.
(5 weeks: You need 200 hours, and you work 40 hours each week)

1. How many milliliters are in one liter? (1000 mL)
2. A chemist uses math all of the time. When you make orange juice from concentrated orange juice, this involves math. If you take a 250 mL can of concentrated orange juice in order to make one liter of regular orange juice, how concentrated is the concentrated orange juice?
Orange juice usually has a sugar concentration of 250 grams per liter. Write your answer for the concentration of sugar in grams per liter. (1000 grams/liter)
Explanation: To make concentrated orange juice, you take out most of the water and freeze it. The amount of sugar doesn’t change. If there were 250 grams of sugar in one liter of orange juice, a can of concentrated orange juice still has the same amount of sugar. 250 grams per 250 mL = 1000 grams per 1000 mL. If you still don’t get it, don’t worry about it.

However, when she decided to start a baking business she found that she would need to measure pounds of flour instead of cups. If one cake uses 3 cups of flour, how many cakes could she bake with 50 pounds of flour?
(Use 4 cups = 1 pound; 66 cakes with 2 cups of flour remaining.)

Problems of the Month-March 2011
Pi day is March 14th. Using pi as my inspiration for the problems of the month means that you get a bunch of circle problems…
1. Practice: Find the area of a circle with a radius of 5
2. Practice: Find the volume of a cylinder with a radius of 5 and a height of 10
3. Practice: Find the surface area of a cylinder with a radius of 5 and a height of 10
4. Mr. Little drank a can of Dr. Pepper, and then he wondered how much aluminum was used to make the can. If the dimensions of the can are 4.8 inches high and 2.5 inch in diameter, what is the surface area?
5. Mr. Little thought his measurements were a little off. Change these dimensions for the can to centimeters and calculate the volume. The answer is supposed to be 355 cm3… (1 inch = 2.54 centimeters)
6. A men’s basketball has a circumference of 29.5 inches. What is the diameter of the basketball?
7. At Papa John’s a large pizza has a diameter of 16 inches. A medium pizza has diameter of 12 inches. Do you get more pizza from one large pizza or two medium pizzas? How much more?

MathCounts
Calvert School participated in the regional MathCounts competition February 5th at Perry Hall. There were 24 schools and over 160 students in the competition. Three Calvert students performed well enough to qualify for state competition: Joe Sakai, William Little and Oliver Schmickel. Congratulations!

1. Mr. Little and Mr. Doss were playing Hot Shot, the arcade basketball game where you try to make as many baskets within 60 seconds as possible. Since it was on classic, they earned 2 points for baskets made in the first 50 seconds and 3 points for baskets made in the last 10 seconds.
Mr. Little scored 60 points. What is the minimum number of baskets that Mr. Doss must make in order to beat Mr. Little’s score?
2. In three games, William scored 8 points, 14 points and 11 points. What is his scoring average for these three games?
3. William wants to score enough points to raise his average to 15 points per game. How many points will he need to score in the next game to raise his average to 15 points?
