AMC Winners

Congratulations to Noah on his second straight win for the Calvert School American Math Challenge.  Noah finished 5th in the state of Maryland!  He has already enjoyed a pizza party with his advisory, and will also receive a gift card from Chick-Fil-A.  Other winners include Tyrese, Nico, Dennis, and William.  Congratulations!

The 7th grade won the class competition, and will receive a special prize soon.

American Math Challenge

October 16-17 is the American Math Challenge. This competition is sponsored by Mathletics. All points earned go toward your monthly total, but these points will also go toward prizes. On these two days, the features of the program will be as follows:

Tuesday, October 16: CHALLENGE DAY 1
•300 points available for each activity, 15,000 points maximum per student


Wednesday, October 17: CHALLENGE DAY 2
•Speed and accuracy in mental arithmetic
•The final score from the first 10 games per level counts toward total points

Prizes!!!
1st place:  Pizza party for advisory
2nd through 5th place:  Gift cards

MathCounts Club

MathCounts Club

The students listed will meet on Tuesdays during study hall in order to prepare for the MathCounts competition in late January.  These 20 students are competing to represent Calvert School at the regional competition.  Only 10 students will compete officially.  I wish everyone good luck and see you on Tuesdays!

More Mathletics

Prizes were awarded to the students with over 10,000 points from their summer math.  These students received coupons for free Chik-Fil-A sandwiches.  In addition, the top students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades were awarded "Back to School Kits" containing a pencil case, mechanical pencil and gel pen, a ruler, a protractor and a scientific calculator.  These students also received Chik-Fil-A gift cards.

Summer Math and Mathletics

Welcome back to school!  I know that almost all of the students spend a lot of time completing problems on mathletics.com.  I am proud of the progress that was made.  Some of the concepts were new, but many students tried successfully to learn them.

Mathletics will be available throughout the school year.  Students will be required to earn at least 1000 points every month.  In addition, there will be rewards for earning over 10,000 points each quarter, and there will be prizes for the student in each grade that earns the most points for each quarter.

Because there are 226 students in the middle school, I appreciate all of the students (and parents) being responsible with the username and passwords.  Can you imagine all of the emails that I have received from over 150 students and parents already?  If you lose it, either contact me or your math teacher and we will email it to you.

Round 2

I am still scoring the first round, but since it is my birthday I figured it would be a great time to post the next set of Olympics related questions!  Good luck!

1.  What is my fastest official mile time?  Closest guess gets 5 points, then 4, then 3...
2.  How many countries will participate in this year's Summer Olympics?
3.  Even though the Olympics are set in London, other cities in the UK will host events as well.  Name three other Olympic sites that will be used for the Summer Olympics this year.
4.  An outdoor track measures 84.39m on the straight parts and 115.611m for the curves.  These very precise measurements leave a difficult problem to solve.  Find the area inside of the track.  Assume that the curves are semicircles.
5.  Hurdles are generally set 13 meters from the starting line with 8.5 meters between hurdles and 10.5 meters from the last hurdle to the finish line.  If the hurdle race is 110 meters, how many hurdles do we need?

1. How many times longer is the 1600 meter race compared to the 100 meter race?

2. In the Olympics, the mens’ shotput weighs 16 pounds. About how much is this in kilograms?

3. Usain Bolt set the world record for the 100m with a time of 9.58. At this rate, how long (in minutes and seconds) would it take him to run the 1600m?

4. Olympic gold medals cost about $300 to make. If there are 302 events in the Olympic games, about how much money will have been spent on making gold medals?

5. The 1600 meter race is pretty close to 1 mile. Which is longer, and by how much?

Our MathCounts team qualified for state competition.  William Little, Joe Sakai, Alex Liu, and Ava Geenen were the official team and Dennis Gong qualified as an official individual.

Silver Level Math Challenges

Students, as a MathCounts school, we are considered a Silver Level school for math challenges.  If enough students complete the monthly challenges, we can compete to become a Gold Level school. 

The following links will take you to the five Silver Level math challenges.  Print out each page and complete the problems.  Turn in the completed worksheets to the folder in Room 202.  Correct answers will give you points toward prizes in May.  Good luck!
