Problems of the Week--12/8/2008
Answers are due by noon on Friday. No Problems next week due to exams.
1. Madi and Sydney are making a snowman when Mr. Little stops by. He notices that the three snowballs have diameters with a ratio of 1:2:3. If the diameter of the smallest sphere (the top) is 18 inches, what is the diameter, in feet, of the largest sphere (the bottom) of the snowman? Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest tenth.
2. What is volume of the middle sphere, in cubic inches? The formula for the volume of a sphere is (4/3)πr3. Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest hundredth.
3. What is the ratio of the volume of the smallest sphere to the volume of the middle sphere? Express your answer in the form a:b.
4. Assuming that our three spheres are placed one on top of the other with no "smushing" or "denting" of the snowballs, how many feet tall is the girls’ snowman?
5. Go to http://snowflakes.barkleyus.com/ and make a snowflake. Email your snowflake to me.

Problems of the Week
Black Friday and Cyber Monday…
Answers are dure by noon on Friday, December 5th
1. My wife went to Wal-Mart at 3:30am to be in the store in time for the sales at 5:00am. There were people that camped out in the Wal-Mart from 10:00pm Thursday waiting to purchase a TV at 5:00am on Friday morning. They were a little cranky… Anyways, what is the percent difference between my wife’s waiting time compared to the “campers” waiting time?
2. People were able to make great purchases on expensive items, but there was a limit to the number of these items that the store kept in stock for the sale. There were four flat screens TVs on sale for $988, but the original price was $1199.99. What was the percentage taken off of the original price?
3. On Cyber Monday, the same TV that people were fighting over on Friday for $988 were available for an even lower price of $898. What is the additional percentage taken off of the $988 price?
4. Black Friday was great for Wal-Mart, but bad for other electronics companies. For example, Circuit City shares have fallen 24% since the end of November, when the price war started. If at the end of November one share of Circuit City stock was worth $0.13, what is the price of one share now? (Fun Facts: Circuit City shares were worth $7.98 during November 2007, and $27.29 in November 2006! Ouch!)
5. I wanted to purchase new clothes for my wife, so I looked at kohls.com. Their offer was an additional 15% off and free shipping on purchases over $100. I found a cute jacket that was originally $42, but is on sale at 60% off. Shipping on this item is normally $7.95. How much will I save compared to regular price if I am able to find $100 worth of merchandise to buy in order to receive free shipping and the additional 15% off?
Special Bonus!!! What is the Wal-Mart effect?

Problems of the Week--11/23/08
Get a head start!
These problems are due in my folder by Wednesday at the end of school, or by Friday noon by email. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
1. How many distinct factors does 2008 have?
2. What is the sum of the first 2008 integers?
3. The sum of 2008 integers is 6023. What is the value of the smallest integer?
4. Mrs. Roche has planned a dinner for 15 people this Thanksgiving. She bought 22.5 lbs of turkey, plus potatoes, cranberry salad, rolls and all of the traditional holiday food. Unfortunately, her son forgot to tell her that he was bringing three of her friends. If Mrs. Roche wants to feed each person the same amount of turkey that she had originally planned, how much additional turkey must she purchase to accommodate these additional guests? Yes, the babies will eat the same amount as the adults. Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest tenth.
5. Thanksgiving Dinner 2008 is to be a special event for the Skeen family. They have decided to put each of the factors of 2008 into a bowl once. Each factor will be selected by one family member using a random number generator. Each family member will then run or walk a distance in yards that is 10 times the value of the factor he or she chose before eating dinner. What is the total number of yards Mr. Skeen’s family will run or walk before they eat their Thanksgiving dinner?
