Summer Math and Mathletics

Welcome back to school!  I know that almost all of the students spend a lot of time completing problems on mathletics.com.  I am proud of the progress that was made.  Some of the concepts were new, but many students tried successfully to learn them.

Mathletics will be available throughout the school year.  Students will be required to earn at least 1000 points every month.  In addition, there will be rewards for earning over 10,000 points each quarter, and there will be prizes for the student in each grade that earns the most points for each quarter.

Because there are 226 students in the middle school, I appreciate all of the students (and parents) being responsible with the username and passwords.  Can you imagine all of the emails that I have received from over 150 students and parents already?  If you lose it, either contact me or your math teacher and we will email it to you.

Round 2

I am still scoring the first round, but since it is my birthday I figured it would be a great time to post the next set of Olympics related questions!  Good luck!

1.  What is my fastest official mile time?  Closest guess gets 5 points, then 4, then 3...
2.  How many countries will participate in this year's Summer Olympics?
3.  Even though the Olympics are set in London, other cities in the UK will host events as well.  Name three other Olympic sites that will be used for the Summer Olympics this year.
4.  An outdoor track measures 84.39m on the straight parts and 115.611m for the curves.  These very precise measurements leave a difficult problem to solve.  Find the area inside of the track.  Assume that the curves are semicircles.
5.  Hurdles are generally set 13 meters from the starting line with 8.5 meters between hurdles and 10.5 meters from the last hurdle to the finish line.  If the hurdle race is 110 meters, how many hurdles do we need?

2. In the Olympics, the mens’ shotput weighs 16 pounds. About how much is this in kilograms?

3. Usain Bolt set the world record for the 100m with a time of 9.58. At this rate, how long (in minutes and seconds) would it take him to run the 1600m?

4. Olympic gold medals cost about $300 to make. If there are 302 events in the Olympic games, about how much money will have been spent on making gold medals?

5. The 1600 meter race is pretty close to 1 mile. Which is longer, and by how much?
